Building a custom pool is much more than digging a hole and adding water.
Done right, it is a carefully planned design-build process that blends engineering, craftsmanship, project management, and thoughtful design into a backyard your family can enjoy for decades.
As a custom pool builder in Houston, one of the biggest misconceptions we see is homeowners assuming all builders follow the same process. They don’t.
Some focus on speed. Some focus on price.
We believe your builder should educate you, not just sell you.
Our goal isn’t simply to build a pool — it’s to create an outdoor space your family will use and love for years.
Here’s what the process really looks like.
1. Discovery & Meet-and-Greet
Every great backyard starts with listening.
Before design begins, we meet with homeowners onsite to understand:
- How you want to use the space
- Whether the priority is entertaining, family time, relaxation, or all of the above
- Safety considerations for children or pets
- Existing grade changes, drainage, easements, or access challenges
- Future plans like outdoor kitchens, pergolas, fire features, or turf
This is where an experienced builder can help you think through things you may not have considered.
Recently, we worked with a homeowner who had significant backyard elevation changes and small children. They had a clear vision for their pool, but hadn’t considered how raised decking elevations could create a safety concern.
Through the design process, we made adjustments they hadn’t thought about—improving safety while enhancing the overall aesthetics.
That kind of guidance can prevent costly changes later.
2. Custom Design With Flow in Mind
This is where your backyard starts taking shape.
A custom pool shouldn’t feel like features randomly placed in a yard.
It should flow.
We approach design holistically, considering:
- Pool and spa placement
- Traffic flow through the yard
- Views from the home
- Outdoor living integration
- Elevations and grading
- Feature placement for both aesthetics and function
Unfortunately, we often see designs that simply don’t make sense.
Good design isn’t just making something look beautiful.
It’s making the entire outdoor environment work together effortlessly.
3. Proposal Review & Comparing Apples to Apples
This step is where many homeowners can unknowingly make expensive mistakes.
One of the biggest myths in pool construction:
“The cheapest pool bid is the best value.”
False.
Sometimes the lowest proposal can end up costing the most down the road.
Why?
Because many proposals are not created equally.
Some builders show beautiful renderings loaded with features… then price only a stripped-down version of the project.
Later come the surprises:
- Change orders
- Undersized equipment
- Missing features assumed included
- Upcharges for items you thought were standard
Our proposals are intentionally detailed so you know exactly what you are paying for.
We often encourage homeowners to compare proposals side by side so they’re comparing apples to apples — not apples to oranges.
4. HOA, Permits & Engineering
Once design and selections are finalized, approvals begin.
This may include:
- HOA submissions
- Permitting
- Engineering when needed
- Structural recommendations based on site conditions
Some projects require little to no structural engineering.
Others may require:
- Helical piers
- Void boxes
- Grade beams
- Additional structural reinforcement
And when an engineer recommends something, we believe in doing it right.
Could helical piles add cost upfront?
Absolutely.
But spending money now for peace of mind is far less expensive than fixing a structural issue later.
5. Excavation, Steel & Plumbing (The Fast-Moving Phase)
This is often the “wow” stage for homeowners.
Excavation begins and suddenly progress feels rapid.
In many cases, we can go from:
- Excavation
- Rebar/steel
- Plumbing rough-in
- To gunite
…in as little as 3–5 days.
Homeowners often think:
“This is going to be finished in no time.”
And while early stages move fast, quality still matters tremendously here.
These are some of the most critical structural phases of the project.
Shortcuts in steel, plumbing, or layout can become long-term problems.
This is why builder quality matters.
6. Gunite & the 30-Day Cure
Once gunite is complete, the shell begins curing.
Many homeowners assume work pauses here.
It doesn’t.
During the cure period, additional progress often continues with:
- Electrical
- Tile
- Coping
- Decking
- Equipment prep
- Outdoor living components
The project keeps moving.
Gunite curing is simply part of doing the process correctly.
7. Decking, Outdoor Living & Finishing Features
This is where the backyard starts becoming a true outdoor living space.
Depending on your project, this phase may include:
- Pavers or decorative decking
- Patio extensions
- Pergolas
- Outdoor kitchens
- Fire features
- Turf
- Landscape and lighting
One thing we try to do for clients adding outdoor living structures:
Even if a pergola or outdoor kitchen extends the full project timeline, we try to have clients swimming while those finishing touches are being completed.
8. Plaster, Startup & Pool School
This is the finish line.
After interior finish/plaster:
- Pool fills
- Equipment startup begins
- Water chemistry is balanced
- Systems are tested
- Homeowner orientation (“Pool School”) is completed
This is where we walk homeowners through:
- Automation controls
- Equipment operation
- Water care basics
- Feature programming
- Ongoing maintenance recommendations
A good builder doesn’t disappear at startup.
How Long Does It Take to Build a Pool in Houston?
Typical timelines:
Pool + Spa Only
6–8 Weeks
(Weather permitting)
Pool + Outdoor Kitchen / Pergola / Expanded Outdoor Living
10–12 Weeks
(Though we often aim to have clients swimming within 6–8 weeks)
Every project is different, but realistic expectations matter.
Case Study: The Stiles Project
A great example of a smooth custom build.
Included:
- Large custom pool and spa
- Patio extension
- Pergola entertainment space
Highlights:
- Fast HOA approval
- No engineering required
- Pool and spa completed in approximately 6 weeks
- Entire outdoor living project completed in 10 weeks
A great example of how efficient the process can be when everything aligns.
Case Study: The Piro Project
A more complex project in Benders Landing Estates.
Included:
- Large custom pool
- Oversized 360 spa
- Artificial turf
- Pavers
- Sunken seating with firepit
- Linear fire and water features
This project also required:
- Engineering
- Helical piles
- Void boxes
Was it more involved?
Absolutely.
Was it worth doing right?
Without question.
Beautiful projects often depend on invisible structural decisions homeowners never see.
Common Mistakes Homeowners Make When Comparing Pool Builders
Mistake #1: Choosing Based on Bottom-Line Price Alone
Price without scope is misleading.
Mistake #2: Assuming All Equipment Packages Are Equal
Another misconception:
“Bigger equipment is always better.”
Not necessarily.
But properly sized equipment with enough capacity matters.
We’d rather have equipment that supports your pool properly today—and gives flexibility for future features—than equipment barely meeting minimum requirements.
Mistake #3: Focusing Only on the Pretty Stuff
Tile and plaster matter.
But so do:
- Plumbing design
- Structural steel
- Drainage
- Equipment selection
- Engineering
Those are the things that protect your investment.
More Than a Pool
At the end of the day…
A great builder shouldn’t just sell you a pool.
They should educate you.
Guide you.
Help you avoid mistakes.
And create a space your family will enjoy for decades.
Because we’re not just building pools.
We’re building backyards where life happens.
